Suikerbossie is the Afrikaans name given to the South African national flower, the Protea. A majestic, sturdy, woody flower of various species, varying in colour and shape. It typically grows at the foot of Table Mountain.
Afrikaans is widely spoken in South Africa, originating from the Dutch who colonised the country in 1652.
It's also a term of endearment that could be translated as "sweetie". Stef Bos (dutch songwriter) wrote the song "Suikerbossie ek wil jou hê" (Sugarbush/sweetie, I Want You So), a traditional song of South Africa.
